Using dictionary definition: "unity is the state of being united or joined as a whole". It is a whole or totally as combining all part into one, also the state of quality of being in one accord; harmony. Bible makes us to understand that God calls his people to live in unity with one another, so it is important to make every effort to live together as one with other fellow believers. 1st Cor 1:10 says "I speak to you, brethren in the name of or Lord Jesus Christ that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought".
In this 21st century, Christians had often had a difficult time in agreeing with each other. I believe this is due to the fact that there are numerous denominations and even many differences within these denominations. Sometimes church doctrines and differing biblical interpretations seems to get in the way of unity. Meanwhile 1st peter 3:8 said we should have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly kind, a tender heart and a humble mind.
Unity and Love: Where there is love, there is unity. John 17:23 says "I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me". Love and Unity works together on the sense that unity cannot stand on its own without love, Col 3:14 "And above all, put on love which binds everything together in perfect harmony". You can also find love and unity in (john 13:35; Act 4:32; Phil 2:1-3; 1st John 4:12).
Unity as Brotherly Love: behold, how good and pleasant it is when brotherly dwell in unity!(psalms 133:1).unity is promoted through brotherly love. Each and every one of us should love his/her neighbour's as he/she loves himself/herself, and will therefore enjoy his/her neighbour's goods as if they were his/her own. The joy of one will increase in as much as the joy of other increases. The best way to living a life long and good life is to love and serve the unity of our neighbour. Romans 12:10 says "Love one another with brotherly affections outdo one another in showing honour".
Unity and the Body of Christ : Unity is the glue in the body of Christ that shows us to be one. Even with all the differences; different perspectives, racism, experiences, denominations, worship practice, and doctrines. We can celebrate these differences and still work together. The church is one body with lots of members from different nations, tribes, kindreds, backgrounds, countries, tongues and people. We are a new creation in Christ and in Him we must be one. We are equal in Christ, who by one spirit has bonded us into one fellowship with Him and with one another through the revelation of Jesus Christ. In the scriptures we share the same faith and hope, and reach out in one witness to all.
Brethren, let's have continuity in purpose or action. In the garden of Gethsemane, the main thing on Christ mind was the unity of His church-those who had come "out of the world" (John 17:6). He pleaded with His father for a unity in the church similar to that which the Godhead experienced. "I pray that they all (His Followers) may be one, as you, father, are in me, and I in you; that they also may be one in us, that the world may believe that you sent me" (John 17:21). The holy spirit is the moving force behind church's unity. By Him they are all baptized into one body (I Cor: 12:13). These baptized members are to have a unity that Apostle Paul described as the oneness of the spirit. (I Cor 12:11; John 15:1-6; ICor 12:4-6; Rom 15:5-6; I Cor 1:10; II Cor 13:11) all these bible verses talks about the extent of unity and the body of Christ, therefore, God's church, then ought to reveal a unity of feelings, thought and action, Be united.
